Évariste Vital Luminais. The Sons of Clovis II (1880)

Évariste Vital Luminais. The Sons of Clovis II. 1880. Oil on canvas. 190,7 х 275,8 cm. Art Gallery of New South Wales. Public domain
This strange painting, that I love, «The Sons of Clovis II» by Évariste Vital Luminais that tell something unexpected and melancholic about isolation and solitude. I saw this painting just before the quarantine time, in Sydney (Art Gallery of New South Wales) where I was for the opening of an exhibition. It’s a work from a French painter of the 19th century Évariste Luminais. There is a second version of this painting in Rouen, in France. Évariste Luminais was a very academic painter, but I think he is the only one to represent this scene in the whole art history. It shows the sons of Clovis II, deriving on a barge. I find it very melancholic, they look totally alone in an empty world. But there are together. Another way of quarantine or containment, for other times….
