Observation Diary. Page 1

I once read a quote by Warhol: “It's great to photograph the same thing all life” or something like that. I really liked it.

What do I have, how to start?

I have 4 windows in my apartment.

Here they are:

- Kitchen

- Living room

- Bedroom

(and this is a balcony).

“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet.” Oppenheim

This is me in self-isolation reflecting on this statement.

At first, I will mindfully watch what is visible from my windows. What is available to me? And since an attentive gaze changes the object of examination, I will look carefully.

Time. I have it in bulk now. I can look out the window at any time of the day.

I'm lucky! I have 2 different views – on the city and on nature.

View 1.

View 2.

And of course the balcony – you can have fun on it!

Need to come up with something. The first thing that comes to mind – just enjoying the view. Photographing it during different seasons.

I have a big black camera (it’s not very similar to the original in the picture). But the smartphone camera is also suitable.

So, I see something that changes with the time of year. Wonderful pond! Although from the ground it looks like a littered puddle. But I love puddles and water.

It is a railway beyond the pond.

Therefore, I start shooting from the same place. I try to take the same angle. I like it! I want more and more new pictures. I set the alarm, get up at night, early in the morning, during rain and snow.

Simple story

The time when I examine something with a long look, I begin to make up stories.

There is a railway behind the pond, people travel to the city to earn money along this pond. So I came up with a story about a contemporary fisherman who went to sea, and the lady of the heart waiting for him.

Dum spiro spero

(While I breathe, I hope)

Or another one. Behind the pond, a logistics centre was built next to the railway. Workers went through the pond all winter long (short way) to “Pyaterochka” market (that exact one). People trailed the way on the ice, and when it began to melt, the path should have melted in the last moment. I won’t miss such a chance! The frame was perfect. From left to right, like a way of life. I understood that somewhere I would fall, but where and what depth would be underneath was unknown. I also did not think about how would I get out. I was engaged in the story, there was a nerve. In general, these narratives are just 100 meters from my window № 1 view.

We turn to view No. 2.

Here, of course, neon lights attract me, like in a movie that I saw in childhood.

100 meters

Product set

Yet it is different from the surrounding reality.

Now the whole life of several houses is drawn up to it. Just as I thought. It's like a temple. We must give it honours. I will shoot it from all sides.

That's all, left to shoot…
