MASBEDO
Theorem of Incompleteness (2008), Ash (2010), Ionesco Suite (2013)
The program unites three videos created by artists during their work in Iceland. Located on a tectonic shift which increases by three centimeters a year, this country becomes a space for a metaphorical dramatic upheaval that unfolds deep inside staying invisible at first glance. Masbedo’s baroque visual language acquires a minimalistic impulse, all the works are connected by the themes of the collision of the elements and civilization, harmony and inexorable chaos.
The first work is the video “Theorem Of Incompleteness” (2008). Somewhere outside of the video frame a dialogue between a man and a woman is occurring. A table amid a thunderous landscape becomes the target of shooting: are there arguments or irreconcilable attitudes? In the Masbedo universe, beauty begets loneliness, and convergence creates an inevitable collision.
“Ash” (2010) video was filmed during the eruption of Eyafyatlayokudl volcano, which affected air traffic around the world. Residents of the small town of Vic gather in the only firm building – the church, to hide from the ashes penetrating everywhere. The submissiveness of the elements and the intense anticipation of the heroes shows the new state of European civilization, which is on the verge of global change.
Video “Ionesco Suite” (2013) echoes the second part of the diptych “Theorem Of Incompleteness” (2008). Now the table is placed in an elegant but uninhabited house. The source of impact on the idyllic image of glass “castle” – an exquisitely served table – is abstract and volatile. What feelings do we experience while watching the blissful stream of confetti? How does awareness of the inevitability of destruction appear? Masbedo invite viewers to peer into the warnings of fate and recall the fragility of the world.
