Laurent Grasso
Soleil Noir (2014)
"Soleil Noir", the first video work in the series of broadcasts "Digital Exchange", was created by one of the most mysterious French artists Laurent Grasso for the exhibition of the same name in 2014. It is one of the results of his ongoing research on mystical and supernatural phenomenons. Inspired by Renaissance scientific treatises, mythology, modern non-academic science, the artist creates paintings, graphics, objects and works of video art for multi-part total projects around the world, from Tokyo to Paris and Montreal.
The video was shot from a drone — an unmanned aerial vehicle that flies over the desert landscapes of Pompeii and the famous volcano Stromboli. A meditative sound, hypnotic montage, contrasting landscapes and uninhabited ruins — all this creates the effect of meeting with mythical time, "before the times". The mechanical gaze of the drone catches and loses the figure of a dog, whose ghostly presence enhances a collision between the living and dead, artificial and natural, moving and inanimate in abstract infinity.
